European Union Begins Enforcement of Landmark AI Act
Tech companies face strict new requirements for AI transparency, safety testing, and human oversight under comprehensive regulations.
The European Union has begun enforcing its comprehensive AI Act, the world's most ambitious attempt to regulate artificial intelligence. Companies operating in Europe now face strict requirements for transparency, safety testing, and human oversight of AI systems.
High-risk AI applications, including those used in hiring, healthcare, and law enforcement, must undergo rigorous testing and obtain certification before deployment. AI systems that pose unacceptable risks, such as social scoring and certain uses of facial recognition, are banned entirely.
Major tech companies including Google, Microsoft, and Meta have established large compliance teams in Europe and modified their AI products to meet the new requirements.
